In these years many European countries are discussing the development of young children and how to organise schools, day care institutions and leisure time in the most optimal way. Questions about playing and learning, teaching and educating are being debated amongst professionals and politicians and new types of organisations are being developed. A preference for so called 'whole-day-schools' seems to be growing: places where children from a young age and till the age of secondary school (from about 0 to 12 years) can spend their time and 'develop' from morning till late afternoon or early evening.

But what are actually the goals for these organisations? If focus is strongly on cognitive growth and certain learning goals, will there be any space left for creativity end spontaneity, for 'playing only for the sake of playing' or for growth without any specific purpose? Who decides the goals and who chooses the ways to obtain the goals? Can - and should - all goals be decided on beforehand? And what kind of 'educators' do we need to accompany the children in these organisations?

These questions will be open for discussions and dialogues at the conference. There will be Danish participants from the Municipality of Copenhagen and Dutch participants from the HvA (students, researchers and lecturers), from the University of Amsterdam and from ChildCare International. We are aiming at short presentations from a number of participants and room for inspiring round-table discussions.
