Emphasize Empathy

Will you step into my shoes?

Reduced to some cultural, religious or biological characteristics. What remains is the discomfort. A society that tries to do the right thing and does the opposite, and the individual who sees himself as an exception or a fulfillment of imposed quotas. Do diversity and inclusion still have a chance of success? And if so. How then? Are you a student, a teacher or an artist and do you want to know how empathy can help you in your study, work or creative process? Join 19th of November and Emphasize Empathy.

Safe space

The Amsterdam University of Applied Science (AUAS) in the Netherlands and the Seoul Institute of the Arts in Korea, join forces to organize Emphasize Empathy, a unique international event developed in collaboration with the AUAS Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries, the Diversity Hub, the Digital Society School, and CultureHub. The aim of the event is to create a safe space and stage for students, artists and teachers to be more consciously emphatic. To help you develop this important skill, because we believe it is the most important skill needed to make the globalised, diverse world we live in more inclusive.

What the empathy?

According to Paul Ekman (psychologist and professor), empathy is a multidimensional capacity to recogni-se, feel, and/or react compassionately to others. Can more empathy help us tackle the challenges of diversity and inclusion? In the workshop by Sobhi Khatib (DSS programme manager, teacher and researcher) on 29th of October, he explained the different layers of diversity and of empathy, and how empathy can contribute to an inclusive society. On Friday 19th of November, we will discuss empathy, diversity and inclusion within education and the creative industry.

Work on your empathy

During Emphasize Empathy, connect with like-minded people from all over the world. In a safe digital environment we will learn from each other, share thoughts, express feelings and listen to each other.

  • The event will open with the unveiling of the video tapestry created with all the contributions collected from different parts of the world and the result of the workshop held on 19 October. So be sure to watch the video.
  • During interactive sessions, you will get to work on the meaning of empathy in education and in the creative industry and thus you as a student, teacher or artist.
  • The opening speech by an international personality from the world of art and design will initiate a series of questions that you will discuss with each other.
  • In the closing act, the participants will come together again in a plenary session to vote on a common call to action. So Emphasize Empathy.

Emphasize Empathy is developed in collaboration with the AUAS Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries , the Diversity Hub , the Digital Society School , and CultureHub .
