The board of Utrecht University has allowed the Royal Association for Physical Education (KVLO) to establish a special chair on the Pedagogy of Physical Education. For this chair the KVLO cooperates with all six Schools of Physical Education at the universities of applied sciences (ALO's)

The Dutch Royal Association for Physical Education founded in 1862, is the professional organisation for teachers in Physical Education with 10 000 members. The KVLO is a teacher association as well as a union and a centre of knowledge in the field of Physical Education. The mission of the KVLO is to improve children's motor skills to open up a multifarious culture of movement, transmit a range of skills and competences for lifelong participation in sporting and physical activities, thus laying the foundations for a lifelong healthy lifestyle.

The bachelor of Physical Education in the ALO includes study, internships and practical courses of human movement and physiology, teaching skills and pedagogy, research skills and a bachelor thesis and multidisciplinary collaboration on vitality and health. Graduates of the ALO work mainly as a Physical Education teacher in primary and secondary schools and vocational and professional colleges. They can also include working as a community sports coach, trainer/coach, entrepreneur in outdoor activities or as a movement expert in rehabilitation and for children with special needs, i.e. those with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.

Job description

The chair will be embedded in the division of Education, part of the Department of Child, Family & Education Studies of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of Utrecht University. The emphasis in the chair will be on the research tasks.

The professor will conduct research in close connection with the research programme Education and Learning and the research programmes at the Schools of Physical Education, on the broad field of the pedagogy of physical education with an emphasis on primary education. For the pedagogy of physical education indicated topics of research are, but are not limited to, role and impact of physical education teachers on motor development of children in primary education, assessment of development and learning outcomes, the pedagogical skills of the teacher in particular in relation to children's developmental stages. In the programme "Education and Learning: Development in Interaction " research employs a framework that integrates neurocognitive, affective, physical, social and cultural factors. Raising external funds will be one of the tasks. A position for a PhD student (AIO) will be available under supervision of the professor.

The professor will contribute, specifically through guest lectures and thesis supervision to the teaching programmes of the divisions of Education and Special education: cognitive and motor disabilities.

The professor will advise the KVLO and the Schools of Physical Education on improving physical education and pedagogical skills of Physical Education teachers and lecturers.


We are looking for a candidate with:


  • In depth knowledge of the broad domain of physical education and it's pedagogy
  • PhD in a discipline relevant to the pedagogy of physical education
  • Excellent interpersonal, social and communicative skills
  • Proven interest in the position of physical education in primary education and society
  • Ability and proven interest to participate in communication with the agents in the world of physical education


  • Outstanding research achievements demonstrated by excellent publications
  • International visibility and scientific impact
  • Ability to obtain external funding (among others ‘second stream' and EU funds)


  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching and student supervision
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Proven success in supervising PhD students


The chair is a part time appointment (0.2 fte), for four years. In principle, the selected candidate will be seconded from the formal employer to Utrecht University for the duration of the appointment. About the organization

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences hosts research and academic teaching in cultural anthropology, educational and learning sciences, interdisciplinary social science, pedagogics, psychology, and sociology. Research and teaching are concentrated in five areas: Behaviour in Social Contexts; Child and Adolescent Studies; Cognitive and Clinical Psychology; Educational and Learning Sciences; and Methodology and Statistics for the Behavioural and Social Sciences. More than 5,600 students are enrolled in a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programmes. The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences has some 850 faculty and staff members. The division of Education provides undergraduate (bachelor) and graduate (academic and research master) programmes in Educational Sciences and the University Teacher Education programmes for Primary and Secondary Education. All these programmes see a growing enrolment and specifically the academic graduate programme and the teacher education programme for secondary education are in a process of renewal. The research programme of the department, Education and Learning: Development in Interaction , participates in the national research school Interuniversity Centre for Educational Sciences (ICO).
