Aviation Engineering

The Aviation Academy Research Programme performs applied research related to real-life cases and problems in the business sector, with the goal of improving and innovating professional practice. We perform all of our research projects in close cooperation with industry, governmental agencies and scientific institutions or universities.

This ensures a solid connection with state-of-the-art scientific knowledge, as well as a focus on the most urgent and current problems and challenges on the work floor. The outcome of our research can be implemented within a short period.

An example of our research projects : We designed a toolbox which helped a maintenance company to lean up their business proces from 56 to 13 steps. At our research department researchers and phd-candidates from different nationalities are working together with students and partners.

Research Themes

Our researchers explore process improvement for Small- and Medium Enterprises in the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) sector. We apply lean, six sigma and theory of constraints principles and have generated our own approach tailored to smaller MRO companies. We have developed our own MRO simulation game to illustrate these principles.

We are committed to create new air safety knowledge and for the next two years, we will be focusing on two main areas within the context of Dutch aviation:

  • Which methods are available to create a model for air safety?
  • How can we distil information from large amounts of data to increase safety?

We are working on new, non-destructive ultrasonic detection methods for composite damage. These methods will be less labour intensive than the current methods. Our aim is to prove the feasibility of these methods for aerospace. We are also investigating (structural) health monitoring.
