DISC

Developing inclusive school communities

Schools are communities where learners, parents, teachers, school leaders and partners outside school meet. Within inclusive communities each of these actors is given a voice and invited to engage in individual and collective learning processes. Within such an inclusive school community, the learning environment and social environment are closely linked. This can help to secure sustainable improvements towards the best and equal opportunities for all learners.

Such inclusive school communities cannot be taken for granted but need careful attention in developing inclusive cultures. An important step for schools that want to develop the inclusiveness of their community is to increase engagement with actors within and outside the school community, to give them a voice and to welcome, respect, value, appreciate and embrace their diversity in culture, religion, gender, ability or socio-economic background.

Within the ERASMUS+ project Developing Inclusive School Communities a toolbox will be developed that can support schools in strengthening their awareness regarding the inclusiveness of their community, in identifying inspiring examples, in analysing and evaluating the inclusiveness of their school community and in identifying, selecting and implementing possible next steps for action.
