Responseletter usage of oral nutritional supplements
Response to the letter to the editor “The use of oral nutritional supplements in patients with head and neck cancer receiving (chemo)radiotherapy”
We thank Cereda and colleagues for their contribution to the discussion on the effectiveness of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in patients with head and neck cancer. ONS are often subscribed to patients with head and neck cancer in accordance to dietary counseling in order to reach daily energy and protein requirements. However, in our systematic review, we found inconsistent effects of ONS on nutritional status and quality of life. ONS versus no intervention might have short-term beneficial effects on nutritional status, but does not seem to be superior to nutritional counsel
