Second edition of The Higher Education Conference (HEC) 2019

Last October approximately 160 international researchers took part in the Higher Education Conference. Through 60 paper presentations and symposia, they shared their thoughts and expertise on this year’s theme “the research-teaching-praxis nexus”.

Opening and keynote Michael Young

The conference was opened on Monday morning by Geleyn Meijer, the vice chancellor of the AUAS with a short lecture about the importance of flexibilization of higher education for our students. After that, Michael Young, Professor of Sociology at University College London, gave a keynote presentation about knowledge and higher education from a sociological perspective. Young focused on the micro or individual level, with a focus on students’ need for powerful knowledge in the curriculum.

Keynote Arshad Ahmad

Tuesday morning’s keynote was given by Arshad Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan. His presentation illuminated the meso level of the research-teaching-praxis nexus, focusing on the organisational changes within a university that is trying to connect research, teaching and practice. During his presentation, he also discussed his personal experiences at two Canadian universities: Concordia University and McGill University in Montreal.

Inaugural lecture Didi Griffioen

The closing of the conference was the inaugural lecture of AUAS-wide Professor of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (HERI) Didi Griffioen. Griffioen highlighted the macro level of the research-teaching-praxis nexus, by discussing the concept of professionalism and the role of higher education in developing professionalism and knowledge cultures in all professional fields.

HEC 2019 was organised by the department of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of the AUAS, together with the division Higher Education of the Netherlands Educational Research Association (VOR-HO).
