Themanummer Publieke Ruimte

Anders

A dormant battle for scarce urban public space takes place. In our socially fragmented, individualized and compacted cities, however, this shared public space is crucial. This is where the social city is created on a daily basis, people become familiar with the other and the identity of the city takes shape. It is precisely in this same public space that technological solutions are projected in order to solve the challenges with regard to mobility, circularity, sustainability, climate resistance, electrification, etc. How will these claims work out together? How do we rebalance the opposing needs of stay & surprise versus currents & predictability? This integral question is particularly crucial for those places of public space where it is able to function as a public domain. Who has the overview? What are already beautiful or stimulating examples? What lessons can we learn from them? With this special issue we want to explore, show and put on the agenda this dormant struggle for our public space in cohesion.
