Teaching History in Bilingual Education. Perceptions, classroom practice and learning outcomes

Evenement

Op woensdag 14 april om 13.00 uur verdedigt Huub Oattes zijn proefschrift 'Teaching History in Bilingual Education. Perceptions, classroom practice and learning outcomes'. Door de coronamaatregelen zal de verdediging online te volgen zijn.

Over het proefschrift

Het doel van het onderzoek is om inzicht te krijgen in de positie van de vakleerkracht Geschiedenis in het tweetalig onderwijs.

Titel: Teaching History in Bilingual Education. Perceptions, classroom practice and learning outcomes:

The role of subject teachers in bilingual education has been given too little attention and therefore this explorative research into Bilingual Education History Teachers’ (BHTs) teaching in junior secondary education serves as an example. A self-report survey was the starting point that generated an impression of the perceptions that BHTs have of teaching Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Next, two empirical classroom studies were conducted. One study focused on the observation of how the language element of CLIL was being implemented by the BHTs, while the other study used observations to compare history teachers’ use of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) when teaching in Dutch (L1) or English (L2). In our final study basic history knowledge of bilingual education and mainstream students was tested after they had received one and three years of history teaching.
