SDG Barometer

Insights on the engagement of Dutch organizations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

With the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals looming, where does the Netherlands stand? The SDG Barometer provides important insights into the adoption and implementation of the SDGs by Dutch organizations, and at the same time, it is a call to action to all organizations to deliver on the SDGs.

SDG Barometer Netherlands

The SDG Barometer research project studies the adoption and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Dutch organizations (companies, government, education and non-profit/NGOs). It is a collaboration between the Amsterdam School of International Business (AMSIB, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences), Maastricht School of Management (Maastricht University), and TIAS School for Business and Society (Tilburg University).

The research is based on the Belgian SDG Barometer initiative and a spin-off from the PRME Chapter France Benelux. PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) is a United Nations supported initiative founded in 2007, that aims to raise the profile of sustainability in business and management education. The Dutch SDG Barometer research will be repeated every two years in order to monitor and report on progress in the Netherlands towards Agenda 2030. The first Dutch SDG Barometer survey was launched in 2022 and the second research flight happens in 2024.

The 17 SDGs were adopted by the 193 countries within the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They are intended to guide us towards a fairer and more sustainable world and society.

Fulfilling these goals requires effort by all sectors of society. The UN stresses that all organizations, including businesses, can contribute to the SDG’s regardless of their size. To ensure progress is being made to meet the 2030 UN SDG Agenda there is a need to measure the extent to which different organizations are adopting SDGs as a framework to monitor their individual progress.

Mission statement

The SDG Barometer initiative serves as a reference point for comparison over time for understanding the roles, responsibilities, and actions of organizations in the field of sustainability and the integration of the SDGs into their strategies.

Concretely, the SDG Barometer aims to monitor awareness, adoption, implementation & communication of the SDG’s. This is done by executing nationwide research every two years, amongst companies, governmental organizations, educational institutions and non-governmental organizations.

The purpose of the SDG Barometer’s research results is to have impact on four different levels:

  1. Policy: To influence public policy discourse by discovering and setting on the agenda the drivers and barriers which influence progress on the SDGs.
  2. Education: Generating input for transformational business education and academic research on new business models incorporating the SDGs.
  3. Practice: Providing insights and best practices to organizations on the implementation of SDGs in their strategies and monitoring their impact.
  4. Internationalization: Facilitating, monitoring and comparing international progress on the SDGs via the PRME network (Principles for Responsible Management Education).

The research is executed via a national online survey, aimed at Dutch organizations (companies, government, education and non-profit/NGO’s). In 2022 a total of 316 organizations participated. In addition, in-depth interviews are carried out to dive deeper into organizational drivers and dynamics regarding implementation of SDGs. The survey is being repeated every two years in order to monitor and report on progress in the Netherlands towards Agenda 2030.

The research results are open access and freely shared with the public.
