Globalisation and Urban Competitiveness

Challenges for Different Types of Urban Regions

Boek

This paper addresses the relation between urban development, national growth and globalisation. This paper suggests that globalisation and the shift towards a knowledge-based economy have a major impact on urban systems and reinforce the role of some metropolitan areas as engines of national growth. Also, the paper addresses the sources of urban competitiveness and provides a typology of cities. It argues that new policy frameworks are needed to increase the contribution of different types of cities to national growth.
