ELEN SEMINAR

Thursday 19th November 2015

Congres

The English Language Expert Network (ELEN) are proud to announce their second seminar, which will take place on Thursday 19th November 2015. This edition will focus on keeping English-taught programmes at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences effective and attractive.

bridging the gap, ELEN

Have you ever noticed how native Dutch teachers conducting their classes in English tend to display less humour, interaction and inspiration, and fewer anecdotes in their classroom practice? ELEN considers this to be an undeniable gap. Are you teaching your subject in English, and would you like to improve your gap-bridging skills? Consider this an opportunity not to be missed. Feel free to join us to acquire useful knowledge, shed new light and learn more winning ways for effective engagement with your students. If you’re a student in an English-taught programme, we challenge you to take part in our debate and share your valued opinions and thoughts.

Spread the word and bring a friend.

BRIDGING THE GAP speakers

Robert Wilkinson MSc.

Expert extraordinaire in the fields of Language teaching methodology; language policy; integrated content and language learning in higher education, Bob has taught in various schools and universities in the UK, France, former Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands. In addition to that, he managed to publish an incredible number of research articles and took part in the awe-inspiring IntlUni project: an international classroom project involving 38 universities in 27 countries. Recently, he retired from his position with the Maastricht University Language Team.

ELEN on Bob: ‘Bob greatly contributed to the set-up of the Student Affairs Language Team research to be carried out into English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Although the field of EMI has been thoroughly researched, Bob is one of the players in the field to actually put the outcome into practice and bridge the gap between ambition and reality. Also, he has one of the most soothing voices ever heard. We can’t wait to have him around.’

Bob will inform us on how English subject teaching can become more inspiring, by reinforcing peer-to-peer feedback and language support.

Annemieke Meijer PhD.

Annemieke Meijer is a lecturer and academic tutor at University College Utrecht, and the coordinator of UCU’s Writing Centre. Her expertise lies in the fields of academic writing; pedagogies and development of the academic voice. Annemieke shares a passion for internationalisation in higher education, English-medium instruction and CLIL.

ELEN on Annemieke: ‘In our search for an authority in the field of EMI teacher training and coaching, Annemieke instantly caught our eye. Not just because of the immense amount of experience, but especially because of her clear views on how content and language are best integrated in higher education and which measures should be taken to facilitate this. We are very proud to be able to welcome Annemieke to our seminar.’

Annemieke will zoom in on the potential loss of identity in EMI and how it can be overcome.

Poll & debate

Our poll and debate will revolve around a shortlist of statements on English-taught programmes within the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Anyone remotely related to this theme (teachers, students, management, facilitators) will be more than welcome to take part.

Location:

Kohnstammzaal (room 09A10), Kohnstammhuis, Wibautstraat 2-4, 1091GM Amsterdam

ELEN is an initiative of the Student Affairs Language Team (Taalteam Studentenzaken). The network aims to share experiences and good practices as well as to enhance knowledge and professional skills.
