In this presentation, key conceptual foundations for transformative occupational therapy will be reviewed, and examples from the author’s work that have used critically-informed qualitative research to advance understanding of the situated nature of occupation will be illustrated. It is concluded that community-based, collaborative models of research, that encompass knowledge generation to social action, are a key means to both enhance understandings of how social structures, policies, discourses, institutional practices and other contextual features shape occupation and advance socially transformative occupational therapy.
